Colt shines in NFL (preseason) debut

The AP summary:

Rookie Colt Brennan, the former Hawai’i quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist, threw two touchdown passes in the second half, leading new Washington coach Jim Zorn and the Redskins to a 30-16 victory over Indianapolis in last night’s Hall of Fame Game.

Winning seemed like an appropriate tribute to two of the Redskins’ most revered players, Art Monk and Darrell Green, who were inducted into the Hall of Fame along with former Kansas City cornerback and Redskins assistant coach Emmitt Thomas on Saturday. The other inductees were linebacker Andre Tippett, tackle Gary Zimmerman and defensive end Fred Dean.

“Taking my first snap, I went to the line, took a deep breath and thought to myself, ‘Just have fun out here tonight,’ ” Brennan said. “And I had a lot of fun.”

So did the huge contingent of Washington fans who turned Fawcett Stadium into a makeshift version of FedEx Field.

“Guys walking around you are Hall of Famers,” said Brennan on playing in the Hall of Fame Game. “When you get into that stadium — and it’s a real intimate stadium — you’re not blown away by it being the NFL. It’s normal basically. I felt really comfortable there. When it was my turn, I was chomping at the bit. I was ready to play football. It was a nice place to start out. It gives you a lot to get excited about what you’re about to take part of.”

The debuts of Zorn and Brennan produced exactly what the Redskins had hoped for — even if it was a meaningless preseason game.

“I’ve had such an up-and-down offseason since the (Sugar Bowl) game, with my (hip) injury,” Brennan said. “I was looking for something to go right for me. I was thinking, with this being my debut, it would be awesome if I could go out and do really well, and start off my new career on a good note. Luckily, that kind of took place.”

  1. Really impressed by Colt last nite. Not only efficient, but truly fun to watch. After hearing all the naysayers all off-season long, I was stoked to watch him march the Skins downfield for two td’s against the other Colts. That made for a real good time. His sidearm passes and free-wheeling ways reminded me of that guy from Green Bay…Too bad Campbell and Collins did so good, it may be a while before we see Colt firing in games that count…

  2. To the Redskins organization: please open up your camp to former UH now Colorado Crush receiver Chad Owens. Brennan did not play with Owens, but having them both on your team would turn ALL of Hawaii into Redskin fans, for sure!

What a debut for Colt!! 9 out f 10 for 123 yards, and 2 TD’s! Good way to start his career!! He did us all proud!!

    GO COLT!

  4. I think his performance speaks for itself! The guy is an NFL QB for sure! I said it before and I will say it again… I think all the guy needed was a good enough offensive line to give him that extra second and he’s money! And as I thought… It is now very clear!

  5. Colt sure did put on a clinic with those passes he threw!!! I think that he has the making of a young Bret Farv(MR Side arm). Just give it time and his game will be at that level! I seen the game and I think he did just as good as Campbell, if not maybe even a little better(Two touch downs, More than Half the total passing yards)!!! Yes, that would be a safe assumption to make…

  6. Going by what I heard of Colt I went to it not having much expectations. But Colt made me a believer! If he keeps this up Campbell might be out of a Starting position.

  7. What was impressive about Colt’s performance was he showed he’s the whole package….he was accurate, he could improvise, he could move, and he brings excitement to the game….great start for a very promising pro career.

  8. Maybe I missed it, but Zorn had “zero” complimentary things to say about Colt. I understand not getting too excited about 1 game, but comon coach, all negative comments does nothing for a rookies confidence. Geeeeez! I question the coaching style, not Colt.

  9. I’ve watched him for three years, and he is money… very accurate . Sometimes he takes risks down the middle, so I think that is what the coach is saying.
